  • Your personal travel advisor for the future? We think so!

This is something that we all have experienced - that the hardest part of travelling is planning it - getting tickets booked, hotel reservations done etc,all with the best returns possible. Being an online travel portal we have found that more often than not, a user visits various online portals to go ahead and finalize the itinerary. This we consider as a big pain for the end user. This is largely because of information overload or because of the perception of information overload clubbed with  multiple factors like price comparison and destination selection.

This has been further testified by a PhoCusWright report quite some time back, where in it says that it actually takes many days for users to select destination and then to book it.

    image

We always wanted to give tools to users to make sure that booking and post booking experience is taken to next level. A small beta feature is out on our product which we call as our ‘Dig Algorithm’, Its a recommendation platform that we are trying to build across the travel products that we offer. The core idea is to dig into the search results to come up with best recommendations based on the various considerations.

Currently the feature can be explored on international flight search results page. Its a beta implementation to understand how we can fine tune it further by adding more parameters and factors to it, the core idea is to make search even more simpler.

    image

Enabling the ‘Dig Algorithm’ will abandon from the classical approach of sorting results based on fare and will now sort results based on the rating that has been given to individual flights based on their performance on three parameters:

    1) Fare

    2) Duration

    3) Cancellation Policy

A user can further go deep and check by hovering on ratings bar to understand why we rated certain flights better then the other.

As per our tests, the combination of these parameters (with optimal scaling) bring out recommendations of flights or combination of flights that are best suited for travel user has searched. The algorithm is designed to make sure that fare is by and large near about the lowest fare and the duration of flight is shorter with cancellation policy favorable of last minute changes.

This is an ongoing work, where we are working on getting the algorithm even better by understanding multiple other parameters for flights and by bringing this to other verticals like hotels and holidays, We are very excited and would love to hear if you have used the same. Your valuable feedback will bring the best of the product.

The next time you visit Goibibo,do give Dig a try! Who knows,it might save you some time, and more importantly, lead to a travel planning with less frustrations and more smiles.

  • How a python,a penguin and a dog became best friends

    danboa

We at goibibo are big fans of doing things the pythonic way. In the foots of this theme, we were facing a very meager issue but quite a pain in the rear. The testing phase of our django based application required changes in the settings file repeatedly.  The changes are followed by a series of commands - restarting the web-server, restarting celery tasks, etc. When the testing is done purely on front-end, then repeated logins into the server and changing the settings file and running scripts is a tedious task, and definitely counter-intuitive. The whole process gets a sense of unnecessary repetitiveness and hence the testing time and mood suffers. Definitely not the best workflow for a tester.

    We waited for a savior.

And then the clouds thundered, oceans parted and out came the dog.

Okay, this is getting a bit dramatic, lets get some stuff cleared up.

    Question:

But why is it called a dog ?

    Answer  :

This work mentioned above was so much analogous to a behavior of a dog and the project dog acts a watch dog for the django settings file and related services impacting it.

How did we develop it ?

Writing things is important but writing things using the most appropriate or minimalist architecture is also important. To cater to our needs we used the amazing pico ( single threaded web server written in python that allows writing callbacks to HTML).

    Features of Dog:

Its a web interface to the settings file of the django application.

    —Key value pairs are changed.
—Series of command can be set.
—Status of the command can be monitored.
—Changes get roll backed if the command fails.
—Integrity of the settings fie is maintained.
—Raw mode is available to check if the changes made reflect in the original file.
—Permission wise key value pairs are editable for security purpose.
    —Authentication.

  • Goibibo’s Tryst with windows 8

    abhi27788

Microsoft recently launched its much awaited Windows 8 operating system. The operating system comes with a better desktop environment compared to previous versions along with a totally new metro environment. Metro is audaciously simple and looks really clean. No doubt that windows 8 looks promising. Its true that the web won’t lose its space, but applications definitely provide a more personal and enriching experience to the user.

Feeling confident from our Android app and mobile site which has been drawing very positive feedback from the market, we also wanted to get into the store of the most used operating system in the world. Kicking off with really strict deadlines from Microsoft to submit the app in store before 3 weeks of windows 8 launch, we had around 1 month of time for development.

The idea was to keep the app intuitive, fast and most importantly useful. We tried to keep things really simple by dividing the booking process in steps which makes it really easier to understand and also maintains context. Also, the whole tile layout gives a very smooth and soothing experience.

The home page is the search tile with grayed out next steps. We kept other links in expandable appbar to use space.

Use of binding lists and list templates makes search results look really cool. Must say that Microsoft has put in a lot of thought into win8 api. Since windows 8 caters to bigger screens than mobile we have tried to use space by showing searched sector, both ways search results and flight details in  same page, in separate tiles.

A useful feature is that the user can go back from the payment page to the result page without losing search results and alternately again load search results. Payment is through PAYU, our payment partner. That rid us of a lot of hassles along with quality security assurance.

The login process is same as in our android app  - using OAuth 2.0, simple, standard and secure. After login a user can access all his bookings offline as well. What this means is, a user can just snap out his tablet at the airport, show his e-ticket and get in - no need to access the internet, open emails, take printouts. This, in essence captures the goibibo way of doing stuff  - harness the latest and greatest technology to keep things simple.

We are really proud to have launched the Goibibo windows application - and are exhilarated that positive responses have started dropping in after only 2 days of windows 8 launch. Obviously we are not going to stop here. Hotels, bus, holidays - they are all coming soon. After all,we aspire to give you a one stop solution for all your travel problems - anywhere,on any platform!

Our heartiest thanks go out to the Microsoft team who helped us understand a lot of intricacies  of the Windows 8 ecosystem and help streamline the whole development process.

We request everyone to use the app and share feedback. Also, to top it up we have come up with some exciting offers just for Windows 8 users, use promo-code “airwin8” and get flat 800 Rs discount on all your flight bookings.

    Happy travelling this festive season!

It always feels good to grow, it always feels great to scale. It makes you feel good when world around you starts feeling more serious about your thoughts and your deeds. It gives you a sense of responsibility as well, which leads to more challenges.

Goibibo started off as a very small prototype, as a spin off product to understand how market will react on our movement to start selling just domestic ticket pure pure online, it was a journey that started as a mere two weeks project with just 4 of us, and a little experience of travel meta search platform. We started with a mere 1 transaction a day, done by ourselves :) and then……… We just don’t know how these 3 years passed, so quickly.

We love technology at goibibo, we believe in solution offered with best of technology will scale and create a very healthy ecosystem, yielding benefits to all stakeholders (from users to customers to creators). And we felt that this is a right time to start sharing more about internals of goibibo. As it always feels good to know which engine is driving your Car, what extra it can do for you.

On this day, we would love to present you this space which will take you through our Tryst with Technology, Travel and life here @ goibibo.

We hereby also, pledge to start open-sourcing a few of our components in coming days. As developers at heart we love to code and love the community and open source world which gave us so much.
